Buckingham Palace is a palace in downtown London, England and is one of the most famous sights in London. Today the palace serves as the residence of King Charles III., who has been on the throne since September 2022. You can see if the king is at home by the flag on the roof of the palace. If the British flag (Union Flag) is visible, it means that the king is not in the house. The King’s Guards are usually infantry soldiers who guard the palace in their parade uniform of red jackets and bearskin caps.
Buckingham Palace is over three hundred years old. It was built in 1703. It was originally called Buckingham House and was the residence of the Duke of Buckingham. In 1761 King George III. bought the palace as a private residence for the royal family, especially Queen Charlotte. He expanded the building until it finally had three wings around a courtyard.
The palace has an estimated total room area of 77,000 m² with 775 rooms, including 19 state rooms, 52 bedrooms for the royal family and guests, 188 bedrooms for employees, 78 bathrooms and 92 offices. The building measures 108 m front length, 120 m side length, and a height of 24 m.
This palace is home to important works of art by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Canaletto. At the top, the gilded goddess of victory is enthroned. Underneath it are various maritime figures and female figures made of marble. And, of course, with the large statue of Queen Victoria. Behind the palace is the largest private garden in London, almost a park. Many foreign heads of state are received here during their visits to Great Britain.
